Author's Note: I actually did a post explaining the pronunciation of Khiandrian names. Not that this stuff is in any way relevant to reading & understanding the story, but it was bothering me. Because I'm geeky like that, and because no, the apostrophes are not random.

Because I'm a bit of a linguistics geek, and I hate the idea that people may think all those apostrophes are just random (like they so often are in scifi/fantasy):

In other words, for those who don't read IPA, and/or can't see all the special symbols correctly:
The apostrophes stand for ejective consonants. They're like nothing in English (well, except for maybe sometimes in some dialects). Anyway, really cool sounds. <3
"kh" is a voiceless palatal fricative, like in the German "ich".
"tl" is a voiceless lateral fricative, like the "ll" in Welsh (the "Llan-" in place names and so on).
"r" is always rolled.
The vowels are written phonetically, and they're closer to, say, Italian vowels than the English correspondents. Diphtongs are pronounced as written, too. I'm really bad at explaining these since English isn't my first language, but Neir sounds like "Neyr" and nothing like "Neil", and Gaer is something like "Gaher".
